Research Programs in the Division of Physical & Biological Sciences

UCSC researchers explore our world from the smallest particles to the total universe. The problems examined impact our lives from health and the environment to developments in technology. Research projects often involves collaborations that cross disciplines, divisions, and campuses, and is organized within Academic Departments and Research Units, as well as informal research clusters.

Departmental Research Programs

Additional Research Clusters

Biomedical Research: UCSC supports a broad range of biomedical research within Chemistry and Biochemistry, Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology, Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology, Biomolecular Engineering and other departments. Structural biology, the molecular biology of RNA, genetics, bioinformatics, neurobiology and developmental biology are areas of particular strength.

Microbiology: Microbiology research at UCSC is diverse and interdisciplinary, with participants from the Depts. of Environmental Toxicology, Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology, Environmental Studies, and Ocean Sciences, as well as Biomolecular Engineering. Research spans microbial genomes, biochemistry, biomedical and environmental research.

PBSci Research Facilities and Resources

UCSC provides a wide range of state-of-the-art facilities, computing resources, and shops to enable PBSci faculty, staff and trainees to conduct their research.

Research Units

Center for Adaptive Optics: This multi-institutional research center has headquarters at UCSC. The CAO is an NSF-funded Science and Technology Center, focusing on advancing and disseminating the technology of adaptive optics to science, health care, industry, and education.

Center for the Molecular Biology of RNA: The RNA Center promotes interdisciplinary study of the structure, function, and biological roles of RNA. Its membership spans the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences and the Jack Baskin School of Engineering.

Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics: With units at four UC campuses, the IGPP promotes and coordinates basic research on the origin, structure and evolution of Earth, the solar system, and the universe. The institute includes the Center for Dynamics and Evolution of the Land-Sea Interface, the Center for Origin, Dynamics and Evolution of Planets, the Center for the Study of Imaging and Dynamics of the Earth, and the Center for Remote Sensing are affiliated with the IGGP.

Institute of Marine Sciences: The IMS provides facilities, staff and support to faculty, researchers, graduate and undergraduate students interested in conducting marine sciences research. On-campus resources include state-of-the-art marine analytical labs in the Earth & Marine Sciences Bldg. Off-campus is the Long Marine Laboratory Coastal Sciences Campus, which includes the Center for Ocean Health, tanks and pools and a seawater system for marine mammal and other research requiring seawater, support facilities and staff for scientific diving and research vessels, the Seymour Discovery Center (a public education facility), a National Marine Fisheries Service Laboratory and the Marine Wildlife Center of the California Department of Fish and Game.

Natural Reserves: The UC system has more than 35 Natural Reserves. The five reserves that form the UCSC unit spread out along 60 miles of the Central Coast from Año Nuevo Reserve in the north to Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve on the Big Sur coast.

Santa Cruz Institute of Particle Physics: SCIPP is an organized research unit within the UC system, primarily focusing on experimental and theoretical particle physics and particle astrophysics. We are also involved in Neural Systems Research. The institute is a leader in development of custom readout electronics and silicon micro-strip sensors for state-of-the-art particle detection systems using these developments.

STEPS Institute for Innovation in Environmental Research: STEPS is an interdisciplinary research initiative facilitating teams of researchers within UCSC and regional partnerships to address three major initiatives: the effects of climate change, the conservation of biodiversity, and alterations in the earth's water systems.

University of California Observatories/Lick Observatory: UCO/Lick conducts leading-edge research to answer the most profound questions in observational astronomy. UCO provides technical resources to design and fabricate leading instrumentation, optics, programming and detectors, and oersees the Lick Observatory on Mt. Hamilton, California, and co-manages the W.M. Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea, Hawaii.
